I smile back
He tells a joke
I give a laugh
We’re both excited
Today’s the day
After all the training
After all the delay
We’re getting some action
Some fun, and then
After our victory
After we prove ourselves men
We get to go home
With our medals and pride
Be the homecoming heroes
Have the girls at our side!
“Prepare for landing”
We all hear the Sarge cry
Tightly gripping my gun
I stand by his side
He smiles at me
I crack a grin
Coursing through my veins
Pure adrenalin!
Down comes the ramp!
Down onto the sand!
Outward we charge!
Out onto the land!
Shells explode
Bullets whine
Forward we run
One ragged line
Through the chaos
I hear a cry
I glance to my left
He’s not at my side
Slowly I turn
He’s on the ground
His arms are sprawled
His face is down
I run to him
I call his name
He hasn’t just tripped
This isn’t a game
I can’t explain it
But I feel inside
That a part of me
Has suddenly died
The shells fall softly
On a distant land
A single tear
Hits the sand
The battle fades
They’ve cleared the beach
But I only care
For the one at my feet
Now the fight is over
The battle is done
Only the dead remain
Only the dead and one
Slowly, slowly, the darkness falls
And the day comes to a close
It makes no difference, for the light
Left this place long ago
He smiles at me
I smile back
