Well... just got home from uni and I got my first ever fail for an assignment. Clearly there is something wrong with this guys head, I mean common, how hard is it to write an essay. I read the comments that he wrote on it and i'm about to head back up to uni and give him some of my mind.

First off I understand that its university and I should be writing professional work and all the rest however I've been getting away with doing pretty lazy stuff so I kept on doing it, but this guy is taking things to the extreme! First thing I wrote is that the Swan River is a prominent feature of Western Australia, and for those who don't know its a huge river that pretty much runs right through the heart of our the major city of the state Perth. Like the entire state was founded on this river. And he is all like highlighting it and writing in big letters "REFERENCE?!!!?!" and I almost fell off my chair, that like needing a reference for saying that the sun produces heat. Basically it goes on saying reference in big capital letters throughout my assignment for just about every single sentence that did not have a reference.

I just wonder what happened to the day when students were allowed to say their opinion based on their experiences and knowledge rather than reproducing some fancy pants work and letting him take credit on conclusions that you made yourself and truly had nothing to do with it. Sure you might say well its just to back up and further enhance what you found to make it a stronger argument, but then if that is all it is, it should be optional if you want to do it or not, not written in big letters all over your assignment.

The jackass also highlighted one of my sentences and wrote in big letters "WHY?" when the next sentence straight after explained why, to bad he didn't bother to read ahead. It just really gets to me when lecturers think they are so smart by criticising the way that you chose to present your work just because they can't find any flaws in your argument.

The biggest thing in university is not to regurgitate information. Always analyze the question at hand and think about EXACTLY what the question is asking(harder than it sounds sometimes) and get to the point as quickly and completely as possible. A really well written paper that regurgitates information will get a c+ at best. A reasonably well written paper that develops a good point and provokes thought while avoiding padding will receive a better mark. And so on up the chain of letter grades. If that makes any sense.

But then there's what Kris says. Sometimes you will learn that no matter what you believe, you will always be wrong in your Prof's mind and your grade will suffer because of that. So in some cases you need to adapt your writing to what your prof wants to hear regardless of whether or not you agree with it.
