General Robert E. Lee for the South.

Was originally offered a generalship for the Union, before the war broke out, then called the United States of America. Declined saying he would stay with his family and friends, so it depended on what they did. Was put at a desk job for the South, never complained about it. When given the opportunity to finally be a field commander, he turned a Southern route, into a draw, then eventually pushed the enemy completely out of his county.

The things that gets me and tells me that this man was a great leader, was during the Battle of Gettysburg, he ordered an infamous Pickett's charge into the Union center. Upon losing over 10,000 men, a few hundred survivors struggled back to camp, most injured in some way.

Those men actually said on that day, that the reason that the plan failed was because it was there fault and not the fault of Lee. They did not fear being shot for failure, they did not fear being shot for desertion or anything like that. Those men volunteered, after watching over 10,000 of their family, friends, and fellow comrades die, to do the march again, purely out of the respect for the man they believed would not lead them wrong.

Later on in the war, after having very little or no food, for months, his men still did not want him to surrender. When Lee, realized the cause was lost, he surrendered, to spare the lives of countless men and he told them to go home. His men obeyed, they went from never wanting to surrender at the beginning of the day, to complying with going home, just by mere words.

Mere words, not the threat of force and hate Hitler spewed, not the whips and chains Alexander the Great held in hand to spur his armies forward. Mere words ended the war and most of the hostility from the state of Virginia. Later, in recognition of his achievements, Lee was given his own holiday by the state of Virginia and is still recognized as a state hero. George Washington's own University, the one named after him was also amended to Washington and Lee University in recognition of Robert E. Lee.

A great leader knows when to sacrifice his self-image for the sake of his followers.

My Eighth grade History teacher loved Lee. Not only because she was from the South but of what he did. I also think he is probably one of the best leaders in the History of United Stated, if not all time.
This man is no doubt a Great Leader.
